1. Get to safety
Pull over, turn on hazards, and call for a tow. Do not keep restarting a knocking or seized engine.
2. Document the failure
- Photograph the odometer (mileage), dashboard lights, and any leaks.
- Note the date, time, location, and what you heard or felt.
- Save the tow receipt.
3. Take it to a GM dealer
The recall remedy must be performed by a franchised GM dealer. Ask them to document the diagnosis in writing and to note the recall campaign number on the repair order.
4. Get everything in writing
- Repair orders for every visit (even "no problem found").
- The name of the service advisor and any verbal promises.
- Loaner / rental authorization, or denial.
5. File a complaint and a report
- File with NHTSA, see how and why.
- Add your case to this registry so it's counted.
6. Know your options
If the dealer denies coverage, stalls for weeks, or the same problem keeps coming back, you may have rights under your warranty or your state's lemon law. Use our eligibility checker.
