Documenting your case: what records to keep

The paper trail that makes or breaks a warranty or lemon-law claim, organized into a simple checklist.

Keep a single folder (digital is fine)

  • Purchase paperwork, buyer's order, finance contract, window sticker.
  • Every repair order, including "no problem found" visits.
  • Dates out of service, drop-off and pick-up for each visit.
  • Photos / video, odometer, dash lights, leaks, the failure itself.
  • Communications, texts, emails, and notes from calls with the dealer or GM.
  • Receipts, tows, rentals, parts, out-of-pocket repairs.
  • Recall notices, anything GM mailed you.

Why it matters

Claims are won on documentation. A clear timeline of repair attempts and out-of-service days is exactly what attorneys and manufacturers look at first.

Know where you stand

The free 2-minute checker explains your warranty and lemon-law options. Talking to an attorney is optional and only if you want it.
