Your warranty rights and the L87 recall

Powertrain coverage, recall obligations, and what GM owes you even if your warranty has expired.

Recall repairs are free, period

A safety recall obligates the manufacturer to fix the defect at no cost, regardless of mileage or whether your warranty has expired. If a dealer asks you to pay for a recall remedy, escalate immediately.

Powertrain warranty

Most of these vehicles came with a 5-year / 60,000-mile powertrain warranty covering the engine. Many L87 failures happen well within that window.

If you already paid out of pocket

If you paid for a repair that the recall now covers, you may be entitled to reimbursement. Keep every receipt and ask the dealer about the recall's reimbursement plan.

When coverage is denied

Denials, repeated failed repairs, or long out-of-service periods can trigger protections under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and your state's lemon law. See Lemon law basics.
