Early warning signs
Many owners report symptoms in the days or weeks before total failure:
- Knocking or tapping that's loudest at cold start or under acceleration
- Ticking from the top or bottom end of the engine
- Rough idle or misfire codes
- Check-engine or low oil pressure warning lights
- Metal shavings found in the oil during a service
Stop-driving symptoms
If you experience any of these, pull over safely and have the vehicle towed, continuing to drive can turn a repairable problem into a destroyed engine:
- A sudden loud knock or bang
- Loss of power while driving
- Stalling that won't restart
- A low oil pressure light that stays on
Why it happens
The recall traces the problem to bearings that may have been manufactured out of spec. As they wear, the rotating assembly loses tolerance until a rod bearing fails, often with little warning.
